What Does “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made” Mean?

Fearfully And Wonderfully Made Mug, a white mug with a black interior and handle

“Fearfully and wonderfully made” is one of the most quoted lines in the Bible, and one of the most misunderstood. It appears on cards, in captions and on walls, yet the word “fearfully” leaves many women unsure what it is saying about them.

It is saying something generous. Here is where the phrase comes from, what each word means, and how to carry it into an ordinary day.

Where the phrase comes from

The line is from Psalm 139, verse 14, a psalm traditionally attributed to David. In the King James Version it reads: “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

The verses around it describe God knowing a person completely and forming them before they were born. Verse 14 is David’s response to that thought. It is praise, spoken about his own body and life.

What “fearfully” means

In modern English, “fearfully” sounds like being afraid. The Hebrew word behind it, yare, carries a different sense: awe, reverence, the feeling of standing before something sacred.

To be fearfully made is to be made with reverence. With care and intention, the way you would handle something precious.

What “wonderfully” means

The Hebrew word here is palah, which means to be set apart, distinct, marked out as different.

To be wonderfully made is to be made as one of one. You are not a copy of another woman, and you are not a rough draft of a better version of yourself.

What it means for how you see yourself

Together, the two words say that you were made with care and made distinct.

That matters most on the days it is hardest to believe: when you are comparing yourself to someone else, when your body has changed, when you feel behind. The verse does not say you were made flawless. It says the making was deliberate.

Notice, too, that David says it about himself. He is not boasting. He is agreeing with the one who made him, and you are allowed to do the same.

How to keep the reminder close

A verse helps most when you see it often. A few simple ways:

  • Say it aloud in the morning, before you look at your phone.
  • Write it at the top of a journal page, with one thing about yourself you are grateful for.
  • Put it somewhere you look every day.

That last one is why we made the Fearfully And Wonderfully Made Mug. The words sit on the object most of us reach for first thing, so the reminder arrives before the day has a chance to tell you otherwise. It is part of Her Faith, our collection of mugs that each carry a short statement of faith.

A closing thought

You do not have to earn this description. According to the psalm, it was true of you before you did anything at all.
